Roknar was a region to the north of Chalion which consisted of the five Roknari Princedoms on the Ibran peninsula, and the Roknar Archipelago.

Geography[]

The Roknari Princedoms were lands held by Roknari on the mainland of the Ibran Peninsula. The princedoms were bounded by Ibra, Chalion, and Brajar to the south and the sea to the north.

From west to east the princedoms were:

  • Jokona
  • Borasnen
    • Located between Jokona and Vardo and north of Chalion at Gotorget.
    • The capital city was the port of Visping.
  • Vardo
  • Tavaki
  • Jarn

The Roknari Archipelago was a group of islands north of the Ibran Peninsula settled by Roknari of the Quadrene failth, but not part of the Roknari princedoms.

Cazaril claimed that in nineteen months of being a galley slave to the Roknari, he'd rowed around at least half the Archipelago.

Language[]

The language of Roknar is Roknari, which had subgroups of common (called "vile" or "rude") Roknari and court Roknari. Court Roknari had multiple modes indicating the relative ranks of the speakers, such as "servant to master", "master to warrior", and "servant to lesser servant". Pronunciation was "purer" on the islands than as spoken in the princedoms.

Religion[]

The prevalent religion in Roknar was the Quadrene religion, which believed in four gods (Father, Mother, Son, Daughter). The Bastard, regarded as a god by the Quintarian religion, was held to be a demon like his father, not a god like his mother. Quintarians referred to this belief as the Roknari heresy.

An outgrowth of the Quadrene beliefs was that the sort of odd loves under the purview of the Bastard in Quintarian lands were treated as crimes in Roknar. Divines and others devoted to the Bastard, if identified and caught by Quadrenes, were generally tortured and killed by first cutting off the thumb and the tongue (the finger and organ that represented the Bastard), and (for men) the genitals, then moving on to whatever horrible means of death could be devised.

Roknari People[]

Roknari were recognizable by reddish hair and bright coppery brown eyes.

Particular Roknari people seen in the tales:

  • Daris

Behind the scenes[]

There is an approximate equivalence between the Roknar princedoms and the former Moorish (Arabic) presence in Spain, but their culture has been modified with the intent of producing at least some Viking cultural similarity.

The archipelago is roughly located where real-life Northern Africa is.
